On Sunday 12th November at 7 o’clock, the London Hilton Metropole Hotel was bursting at the seams with most of the UK’s best talents in the field of hairdressing who had gathered for the Black Beauty / WAHL Hair Awards 2000. Among these talents were Errol Douglas, Terry Jacques and Desmond Murray.

The evening began with a cocktail reception. Afterwards, we were escorted by the polite hostesses into the Awards Hall and dinner was served. For starter, arranged decoratively on a plate, was Ackee & Saltfish Salad with plantain chips. With a posh do came good manners - meaning the plantain chips crunchy as they were had to be eaten with a fork - a hard deal for some of us. Those of us that tried to be as posh as the event were soon got knocked down to size by Gina Yashere. For the main meal, we ate Chicken flavoured with Jerk seasoning and rice and peas sprinkled with coconut. Was it nice? Well everyone would say their mum’s tasted better but to compensate a mango and chocolate Soufflé was served which was absolutely delicious.

We were entertained by comedienne Gina Yashere. We all know how funny Gina is. She decided to pick on the eating habits of black people. Referring to the first course, Gina took some of us to shame about the way we eat and how we would have eaten the same meal at home. Does the licking of fingers come to mind?

The comedic interlude was followed by an extravagant Autumn & Winter Photo Shoot Show by Terry Jaques Hair & Beauty Salon which displayed a host of different hair styles.

Now to the awards which were hosted by Brenda Emmanus and Irene Shelly from Black Beauty Magazine. For each category a celebrity was on hand to present the award. The celebrities on the night ranged from Sol Campbell, Diane Abbot MP, Ebony Thomas and ex-Eternal singer and now solo artist Kellie Bryan to name but a few.

After all the excitement of the Awards, further entertainment was on hand in the shape of Amoye, a four girl British group in the same vein as Destiny’s Child. The girls performed well on the night and we congratulate them on winning this year’s MOBO unsigned award.

As the evening drew to an end, winners celebrated, others drank champagne whilst the majority got their groove on to the kicking tunes which wrapped up the night.

All in all it was an enjoyable night and one definitely not to be missed next year.
