The Living in Colour Exhibition got off to a slow start for us on the Sunday. Our first challenge - finding the correct exhibition hall in the maze that is Wembley Conference Centre as the signs were only locatable after a considerable amount of ground work on our own part.

Having attended last year’s exhibition, the new venue was pleasantly spacious and showed the organisers had made ambitious efforts in the preparation of this event.

The Exhibition was billed as the UK Consumer Lifestyle Show, boasting all your needs for Living in Colour ‘from dutchpot to laptop’. Well although I saw no sign of any dutchpots there were plenty of Exhibitors of interest on the day.

Amongst the Exhibitors that stood out for us were the British Diabetic Association and the Army. The representative from the Diabetic Association was extremely friendly and spoke knowledgeably on Healthy Eating. She was also able to provide us with a variety of Healthy Eating Leaflets specifically targeted at ‘The African and Caribbean Way’. These were informative and it was good to see foods that we regularly eat categorised into useful food groups for reference. There were also cooking tips and interesting recipe ideas.

Although we had shown no interest in the Army stand, we could not bypass it without being stopped. The Sergeant I spoke to had been in the Army for 14 years and still enjoyed the variety of life such a career presented. He did a good job in describing the opportunities for everyone in just about every profession as the ‘Army needs them all’. The Metropolitan Police were also in attendance but seemed happiest talking to themselves as opposed to talking to any of us.

The activities on the stage were slow in starting, running nowhere near to the defined schedule. When the stages came alive however, we were certainly entertained. Highlights had to be an innovative fashion show featuring the fashions of Mama Afrika. It was good to see how African styles had been combined with the more conventional elements of Western dress.

Curtis Walker also did a stint on stage. He was as hilarious as ever. Through his jokes he emphasised the importance of attending and supporting Living in Colour and other such events.

Although the Living in Colour exhibition was not perfect, it still remains an event I would recommend you attend next year. Living in Colour is a unique experience in that it presents an opportunity to meet and talk to progressive people within the Community, gain useful information, sample products and also be entertained.
